ESART - Escola Superior das Artes Aplicadas, do Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco

I teach flute and chamber music at ESART since 2009. In this decade, the flute class has risen in the number and selectivity of candidates. It is now one of the most competitive flute courses in the country, with an acceptance rate (vacancies per applicant) averaging well below 1/10.

My primary teaching is dedicated to this small class, where students of the Licenciatura and Masters in Performance receive 90-minute lessons, and Masters in Teaching students receive 60-minute private lesson. All have access to a world-class piano accompanist, and multiple recitals.

A very high level of motivation and discipline is expected from all students in the class. No “diva” attitude is tolerated, and because students support each other, everyone learns faster and has more fun during these important years. Once graduated, students become professional colleagues for life.

ESART flute graduates are employed in schools and ensembles across the country, leading busy lives as musicians. Most students begin performing and/or teaching before graduation.

For prospective students, I recommend careful attention to the website of ESART, to know the specific audition requirements, along with general course requirements.

It is ideal to book a private or Skype lesson or attend a master class with me well in advance of the entrance exams, ideally during the 11th grade, or early 12th grade. You will get a feel for how I work, and what I look for in a student. Entrance exams are usually in May. To book a lesson or find a class, click here.
