Teaching

I believe studying flute seriously should be fun!

Devotion and focused work are necessary, of course, but I like to balance that with spontaneity and experimentation, keeping in mind the uniqueness of each student.

As a student of mine, you will benefit from my decades of performing and teaching experience. You will also benefit from my ongoing study of bodywork, neuroscience, Alexander Technique, and Integrated Practice. I have at my disposal any number of strategies, tools, and experiments to share with students, plus a giant dose of compassion and fun.

In master classes across Portugal and in the United States, among other topics, I help students with:

  • integrating technique, sonority, and expression

  • the physicality of flute playing

  • making practice effective and enjoyable

  • performance preparation and dealing with nerves

  • orchestra audition preparation

At ESART (Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas, Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco), I have been teaching undergraduate and masters students since 2009. The flute class is one of the most selective in the school and ESART flute graduates are employed as orchestral, chamber, and solo flutists, conductors, teachers, and conservatory directors throughout Portugal.

Masterclass feedback

Thanks for a fabulous masterclass yesterday!

You really gear your teaching to the level & age of the student so nicely! Have heard from all students and they had a great time. Plus, the improvement was very easy to hear.
— Laurie Orr, Buffet Crampon New York Showroom

You have this capacity to communicate so efficiently and pragmatically, with clarity, humor, imagination, lightness, creativity and competency (and much more…)
— Prof. João Pereira Coutinho, Lisbon Conservatory

My students loved it! It was the perfect way to end the school year. The bird improvisation was a hit!
— Prof.ª Sílvia Sobral, Almada Music Academy
